Critically examining the role of philanthropy in supporting systemic alternatives has always been a key part of EDGE's work. Too often, funders have been part of the problem rather than the solution, moving funds at their whim and creating challenging grantmaking conditions that hinder the work of movements. We believe that one of EDGE's roles is to ensure that progressive grantmakers and funders are held accountable to the movement leaders they claim to serve.

For this reason, the EDGE Team proposes that the focus of EDGE's 2025 Conference will be on funders' accountability to movement leaders fighting for justice and their tangible commitment to systemic change. This topic emerged as a critical issue during the 2023 Conference, when despite significant discussion and applause from funders, there was a noticeable lack of follow-up action and accountability on their promises and commitments. More recently, concerns have also been raised about funders withdrawing financial support due to political stances. Addressing these issues is essential to fostering genuine partnerships and effectively supporting systemic change efforts.

EXPANDING ACCOUNTABILITY:

Moving Beyond Pledges

The EDGE community believes that accountability needs to go beyond signing pledges or making empty commitment statements. We must pose some difficult questions to ourselves as funders. What does it mean to be truly accountable to movements and what do accountable practices look like? We suggest that It includes eliminating the trend-driven nature of philanthropy that shifts priorities depending on arbitrarily identified trends.. Accountability also means that philanthropic organizations must organize within the sector, advocating among peers for grantmaking practices that drastically shift power towards movement organizers and systemic change leaders.

Accountable funders must demonstrate that they are listening to what movements are asking for, shifting their own practices and ideas, and taking risks to prioritize systemic alternatives and systemic change. They must operate with transparency, be guided by and be open to the feedback received from movements, and practice ongoing reflection to prioritize systemic change moving away from being reactive to trends alone.

We envision that the conference would provide a platform for movements and funders to discuss the above ideas; their learnings, priorities, practices, successes, and areas for growth. In particular we also encourage sessions dedicated to discussing the implications of taking explicit political stances by movements. These sessions will explore how funders can continue to support movements even when their work is deemed "too political," and how to navigate the challenges this presents.

Our goal remains for the 2025 EDGE Conference to be a critical platform for exploring these themes and driving the conversation on how funders can genuinely support systemic change. The focus on practical accountability, avoiding extractive practices, and addressing the challenges posed by political stances will ensure that the conference not only addresses key issues in philanthropy but also leads to actionable outcomes that genuinely support the movements at the forefront of social justice.
